Project Experience
The National Health Laboratory Services (NHLS)(South Africa), incorporates the laboratories of the South African Institute for Medical Research, the state owned laboratories, the National Institute of Occupational Health and the National Institute of Communicable Diseases.
NHLS selected HST when they embarked on a project that encompasses the implementation of the TrakCare Lab LIS System into all 322 laboratories throughout the nine provinces of the country.
The project includes configuration of the system to meet the client’s business needs, undertaking software development by a team of highly skilled developers. Improved work processes are translated into Standard Operating Procedures in the laboratories, resulting in better patient care. Skills development and knowledge transfer are key to the success of the project. Interfacing of all instruments and analysers in the various laboratories to the LIS system also forms part of the implementation.
All projects are executed on a methodology designed around the natural life cycle of the project, and is based on international standards as defined in the PMBOK methodology. This includes initiation, planning, execution, control and closure of all projects. The focus is on managing Scope, Cost and Time. A fully fledged project office, resourced by project managers certified by the Project Management Institute, as well as strong, experienced administration personnel, ensures delivery of successful projects that meet international benchmarks.
Strict adherence to the methodology and disciplines enables a concise audit trail of the project. Detailed project plans are essential, with specific deliverables, milestones, timelines and costs included in the project plan. Resource planning is the norm, and regular progress reports and feedback to stakeholders are essential. A formal process is also followed to monitor Risks and Issues, and Change Requests are processed through an established Change Management Forum.
A detailed training plan is in place, and at the end of the project, over 4,700 end users will have been trained on the new system. Training is conducted by highly qualified trainers, all with the relevant health-industry background.
This implementation is the largest LIS implementation in the world, and is receiving international interest throughout the healthcare industry.
